Parliament has voted a bill authorising the Head of State to issue a decree on the ratification of the Paris agreement on climate change adopted at the end of the COP 21 in Paris-France.

This bill was voted last June 2016 during the second Legislative session of both the lower and upper houses of parliament.

The ratification of this Agreement according to the MPs would help reinforce Cameroon’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2035.

Defending the bill, Cameroon’s Minister of the Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development, Hele Pierre, and his counterpart of Forestry and Wildlife, Philip Ngolle Ngwesse, reiterated the need for Cameroon to join the global fight against Climate Change.

The ministers said by adopting the climate change agreement, Cameroon stands the chance of benefiting from international subvention, which would be used for climate change mitigation and or adaptation.

Quizzed on government’s strategy in combating climate change, Hele Pierre, presented a forty-seven point strategy to be implemented by government to prevent climate change.

Aimed at reviewing Cameroon’s strategies in the fight against climate change, the newly voted bill is in consonance with President Paul Biya’s commitment last year November 2015 during CoP 21 in Paris-France to intensify efforts against climate change in Cameroon.
